Getting Started - Cleaning Out The Pantry Now that you have planned your pantry for function, it is now time to get started on reorganizing! Once you have established your pantry area, youll want to start by removing everything - I know, I know - dont freak - by removing everything will be able to help you get started and in order. 1. Empty your pantry completely - moving everything into boxes, tabletops and/or counter tops. Discard or recycle anything that you find is spoiled, expired, stale or otherwise unusable. 2. Before setting about to put things in order - you are going to have fun by disassembling whatever food cupboards you currently use. Look at everything as you take it out and consider the following: How long has it been since you used that item? For example, Herbs - loose a great deal of flavor after 6 months even in a dark, cool space. While youre at it check expiration date and throw away accordingly. Remember the rule: When in doubt, Throw it out!
The style of your kitchen pantry can be as varied as your design. Most pantries are a small room carved out of the kitchen space and have standard walls and a small standard door for access. Dont have enough room for a pantry? If possible, when you are designing your kitchen, borrow the space from an adjoining mudroom or laundry room, to enlarge your kitchen space. You will be spending more time in your kitchen than you will in other small utilitarian rooms. You can also build a food pantry to match the rest of your cabinets. Many cabinet makers offer floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets of varying sizes which allow you to add the option of a kitchen pantry within a small kitchen space. While you gain a significant amount of storage space with a pantry cabinet, you do lose some counter space, but the trade-off may be worth it to you. A cabinet pantry will look very upscale in any design and should be considered as an option when you design your new kitchen.
2. Wipe out the shelves; line them with contact paper, if you like, for easy clean-up. 3. Store like items together; try not to over-stuff. 4. Store all your heavy items on the bottom shelf or floor of the pantry -- wouldnt want to ruin your nice shelves with too much weight. 5. Use air-tight storage containers liberally for pantry staples. 6. Put snacks or kid-friendly items low enough for the kids to reach them when needed, and so they can help unpack the groceries or help in the kitchen getting supplies. 7. When unloading groceries, try not to shove items in your pantry in an effort to make it fit. You will quickly have pantry de-organization! 8. Everything should have a place -- I realize sometimes thats easier said than done. You can designate an area for junk and items that just dont fit right anywhere else. I usually put a basket on the floor of my pantry to "catch" items like this -- I put a bag of onions, a sack of potatoes and rice waiting to be opened in there too. It gives grace to pantry organization.
A pull-out pantry cabinet is part of the main kitchens cabinetry and can be a very useful choice if you have no good location for a walk-in pantry. Instead of a cupboard door that swings open, the cabinet front is attached to shelves on rollers which pull forward out of the cabinet so you get complete access to all shelves from both sides. These cabinets are available full height (which blend gracefully with wall oven stacks and fridges), as base cabinets, and even as wall cabinets. Their biggest plus is full, easy access right to what would normally be the back of the cabinet shelves, so you can pack them full of boxes and cans without having to move whats at the front to get at the back. They are, however, quite expensive because of all the mechanical gadgetry inside. If you have a suitable existing cabinet in your kitchen, which currently just has shelves, you can get pantry-cabinet fittings which can be mounted inside to turn the whole thing into a pantry cabinet.
